How then can we raise our children to become people with a true moral compass? How do we as parents teach our children to understand that to live and lead an upstanding life, it takes more than just making the right or wrong decision?

As parents, we put a lot of emphasis on our children’s education to make sure they stay ahead in the race, to make sure they get into Ivy League universities and so on. We go a long way to secure a debenture, make the generous donation to prospective schools and even volunteering our time to work in the school. We spend days and nights working out what’s best for our young children in terms of their education and their well-being.

It is true that first and foremost, our children need to have a good education for it is part of the foundation of being a good citizen. There is no doubt that a good education is a bridge to success and without it, the future of our children poses uncertainty. But how much of our children’s education contributes to or makes up the sum of their characters?

In addition to a good education and a set of principles to guide them to make the right decisions, we need to instill in our children a compassionate and caring heart, an empathetic attitude toward people, community, and the world.

Motherhood has been a long journey for me. Being a single mother for twelve years, I have learned the importance of mother and child's relationship. Raising children is a lifelong career and require patience, perseverance and love.
