As parents, we put a lot of emphasis on our children’s education to make sure they stay ahead in the race, to make sure they get into Ivy League universities and so on. We go a long way to secure a debenture, make the generous donation to prospective schools and even volunteering our time to work in the school. We spend days and nights working out what’s best for our young children in terms of their education and their well-being.

It would seem that the children of this generation put far too much emphasis on how to go after what they want but not enough on how to give back. It is always about what they want but seldom about what they can give. We as parents have to take some responsibility for our children’s lack of awareness and willingness to give, especially to those who are in need. Our children live in a bubble where they are shielded from the poor, from the less fortunate.

They don’t relate to those who are different from them, nor do they feel the need to offer their helping hand to others. “What can I do, I am only a child.” or “I don’t have much myself, how can I give?” these are the voices of our children.

Motherhood has been a long journey for me. Being a single mother for twelve years, I have learned the importance of mother and child's relationship. Raising children is a lifelong career and require patience, perseverance and love.
